Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Heshilafu, Shache County, Xinjiang. It was named by by Wu Naiyuan et al. in 1976.


Lithology and Thickness

Limestone. Composed mainly of light-gray to black-gray limestone, shell limestone and organic limestone, intercalated with light-gray-green and brown-red siltstone, fine-grained sandstone and blackāˆ’dark-gray shale, light-gray quartzose sandstone and conglomerate, 472.2 m thick. The formation does not change much in lithology, and the thickness is thickening from east to west.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Kelitak Fm; coeval with Hantierek Fm in this same region

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying Kalawuyi Fm

Regional extent

Distributed in the foreland of the Kunlun Mts. south of Yengisar-Yecheng of the Qipan Mountain area, and around Sangzhutag and Bochatetag south of Pishan Mt., extending NW-SE in a strip.

Fossils

Abundant Fusulinids: the Eostaffella mosquensis assemblage zone; corals Dibunophyllum sp., Arachnolasma sp., Hexaphyllia sp., Gangamophyllum sp., Clisiophyllum sp., Zaphrentoides sp., Carcinophyllum sp. and Caninia sp.; Brachiopods Gigantoproductus edelburgensis-Striatifera assemblage zone; Foraminifer Archaediscus-Plectogyra-Janischewiskina assemblage zone; Ammonoid Goniatites sp., etc.
